Biblia, the Warrior writes “The Sydney Morning Herald reports “The internet [sic] could become even more difficult for governments to regulate with a new website, Wikileaks, promising to provide a safe haven for whistleblowers to upload confidential documents …”
Thank goodness someone has finally found a useful purpose for the Internet (email, discussion groups, access to information, software download capabilities, free online games, etc not withstanding, of course)!
Interesting comment in the report by Kim Sawyer, an associate professor at the University of Melbourne and the vice-president of Whistleblowers Australia. She said (amongst other things) “… whistleblower protection laws were “just cosmetic …” which is widely acknowledged here in Australia. What’s the story in other parts of the world?
[sic]?
I’ve been lowercasing “internet” for some time now. Seems like the Sydney paper’s made a reasonable style decision. (Nothing to do with the story itself, mind you, but wouldn’t language nitpicking be more effective if saved for something with at least a modicum of substance?)
Wiki Blackmail
WikiLeaks is a good idea, but can also be abused with some blackmail or some other nefarious purposes. Not all good ideas will be used by good people- some bad ones can use the new technology, too.
Cryptome
Before anyone gets too excited about WikiLeaks, I suggest they head over to cryptome.org and have a look at the conversations jys was included in.
Small correction to LISNews title
Just thought I’d mention that Wikileaks is not an Australian site as shown on the subject ‘header’ in LISNews – it was reported in an Australian newspaper, and some Australians are involved.
From the Wikileaks website: “Wikileaks was founded by Chinese dissidents, mathematicians and startup company technologists, from the US, Taiwan, Europe, Australia and South Africa.”
