Somebody writes “Essays: Prospect Magazine: The Google search engine is making many of the world’s great libraries available online. Is this an advance for scholarship, or, as a French librarian argues, a victory for Anglo-Saxon bias and trivialisation?”

    Foreign Language
    Certainly, there is a need for more foreign language materials to be placed on the Internet. National libraries should be willing to cooperate with google.com, or make up their own services, rather than complain. Obviously, the whole world benefits if the orignal language item was available online, as well as translations into other languages as well. why doesn’t the French National Library include purls of free e-books in German, Spanish or Arabic from other countries? They don’t have to own a physical copy on the shelf to add it to their electronic collection. But almost no one does this, and so the central catalog remains dispersed instead of being unified like google is trying to do.
          There remains a great deal to do.

    Libraries don’t have the vision…
    Libraries don’t have the vision to do anything like what Google is doing, or, at least, embrace Google rather than being resistant to it. Libraries give lip-service to sharing data but in reality they are very protective of their data and unwilling or unable to share data due to system incompatibilites and difficulties.
