Sources for Disruption of Library Services
“That graphical analysis of sources for disruption is really interesting. What would the same type of analysis look like for academic libraries? Here’s a lightning quick example using the library I work at as an guinea pig. This image is not meant to be comprehensive, just a proof of concept. This doesn’t prove that libraries are imminently doomed to be disrupted, only that many services external to the academy would like a slice of the action. Let me know in the comments what I’m missing.”

    Nice piece of work, however if anything the nature of many of these “disrupters” suggest that academic libraries are still very necessary.

    Many of these are not able to successfully disrupt many academic library services. For instance, you list DOAJ and other open access journals. From my perspective, we could only hope that this would be a good result, but in reality, pay-for-content is still the name of the game for most journals, and often the prices are exorbitant. Yes, users can see small samples of books in Google books, and articles with Google scholar, but they are still confronted with prohibitive paywalls if they want the entire content.

    Many of your other examples do a very poor job of replicating library content. Yahoo Answers has an extremely low signal-noise ratio. Library thing is useful, but has terrible authority control.
