Restrictive Content Control

There is an article at Wired.com about a new technology that would require a thumb print before a DVD could be viewed. Librarians should watch this technology becasue someday this could be incorporated into ebooks and your first sale rights could be extinguished meaning you could not let more than one person read the book.

    What about DVDs themselves?
    In terms of overall public library usage, a much more important consequence would be that DVDs would be useless as circulating items. This proposed DRM design is Big Media at its worst–and as usual, that worst rules out libraries, giving stuff away, selling used stuff, and anything else that “diminishes the income potential of the rights-owners.”

    All this technology will do is prevent people from lending a copy to someone? It does not directly address the issue of actually copying a DVD. It is no different than software programs that had passwords or other restrictions, because someone still found a way to copy them.

    I think technologies like this are only making the gap between the haves and the have nots bigger. Only those with excessive money will get to enjoy movies or other digital content as technologies like this are developed.
