Parent lobbies to keep books, asks ‘Where would it end?’

News From Iowa where parents, after books were challenged, collected more than 140 signatures on a petition asking the high school to keep the books in freshman classes. The books in question were “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou, which describes the sexual abuse of the author at a young age, and “The Chocolate War” by Robert Cormier, which contains profanity.

    Where will it end?
    The Taliban outlawed paper bags and applause. Heine wrote, “where they have burned books they will end in burning men”, and from 1484/88 to the early 18th century they burned people, and again from 1936 to 1944/45. Although in the case of Nazi Germany the burning of people was of a different sort. And the pseudo-religious mindset that would burn people at the stake is still very much in vogue today throughout North America.

    Ms. Myers is incorrect in her assessment that children would only have Little Red Riding Hood to read, by the way. The original version has come under attack because Little Red was carrying a bottle of wine in her basket.
