Nice Column by Brian Culp, reporter with The Reporter-Times in Martinsville,IN.
He says libraries aren’t exactly the same as they were 20 or so years ago during his childhood. These days they have even more.
He can walk into either of my local libraries, or one of the many branches, and find movies, music, and Internet access.
That’s right, the libraries have embraced that which was supposed to have sounded their death knell.
Unrealistic expectations
It is correct to say (and expected) that Internet has lots and lots of good information and misinformation (or bad information). Similarly, the library’s stock can never be complete or absolute, and not always all the information that is looked for at the library is found there, the information is often out-of-date. So, filtering for good information is necessary whether you are at the libary or searching the Internet. This requires looking in both places, not just one. It is unrealistic to expect to find everything on the Internet as it is unrealistic to expect to find everything at the library. That’s why research is difficult because what you are looking for is never in one place. It takes time and effort.
