Want your kid to graduate? Pay for the books

The people keeping the books for schools in Johnson County don’t like the idea of turning families of students over to collection agencies or taking them to court.

But they have little choice when the county’s six public school districts are owed nearly $270,000 in outstanding textbook rental.

Clark-Pleasant schools are still owed $24,000 of the $313,000 they collect in textbook fees each year, and Franklin schools have an outstanding balance of $50,000 on the $326,000 they should collect.

Schools in Johnson County try different strategies for collecting the money owed them, including hiring collection agencies, filing court cases and keeping seniors from participating in graduation.

Indiana is one of 10 states that do not fully fund textbooks. School districts buy the books, then parents pay rental fees every year to cover those costs. Read the full story here
