Mayor Brian Cook said as long as it doesn’t happen again, they’ve decided to move on.”
If I walked off my job…
If I walked off my job at the library I would be fired. If I walked off my job as an RN I would be fired and lose my license and if anything happened to my patients I could be imprisoned.
What a wonderful example the library staff set. If the fire department, or the water department staff did that they would be fired. If the trash collectors did that they would be fired. However the eleven library staff (including the 4 librarians if they participated) demonstrated just how they feel about the library – that it is less important than other municipal services. Actions speak much louder than words. In my city the firefighters and paramedics have worked without a contract for over a year, yet they stay on the job because they feel they provide an essential service. The library staff have demonstrated that they themselves feel they are expendable.
This should not have come as a surprise to them. The merger has been in the works for some time, and it seems to have been well thought out according to the feasability study undertaken by the county and the city.
I would have fired them all. If you feel you’re expendable you are. In my opinion I’d rather have the trash on the streets an extra day than the library closed.
If you don’t like the conditions speak up or quit; don’t go out of your way to make things difficult for the patrons and library management. It is a job, it is a career, but it is not a guarantee of lifelong happiness.
Thanks to these people for demeaning libraries even more, when their referendum comes around I bet the citizens will reject it just like Salinas. No one is going to say how courageous those librarians were to take that risk, they will remember oh, the library that closed and no one noticed because the library staff are such whiners.
