Utah Coalition calls for filters at libraries

News Out Of Salt Lake City says a conservative Utah coalition wants the Salt Lake City Council to get tough on Internet pornography at city public libraries.

Councilman Dave Buhler wondered why the city library system has a different stance on filters than most other libraries statewide. “I find it curious that our library has resisted filters,” he said.
While the council can’t make library policy decisions — those are up to the board — it can make budget decisions. Brady said filters are a budget decision since non-filtered libraries are ineligible for federal funds under the Children’s Internet Protection Act.

    We use Netnanny and there is no easy way around it nor does it cause extra work. If the filter they are using is that easy to get around then they picked a bad product.

    So did they pick a bad product to say filters are bad or did they just use bad judgement?

    How easy is it to turn off to give adults unrestricted access? Do you have to be a Sys Admin to do that, or can any of the librarians disable the filter?

    That’s not really relevant. What is relevant is that you cannot deny or restrict an adult’s access to information, but censorship advocates demand filtering to do exactly that. CIPA is supposed to restrict filtering to computers used by children. But that isn’t good enough for some people. And if you are going to filter adult-use computers with software that can be disabled with a click of the mouse, then why bother with the financial and administrative burdens of installing filtering at all?

    We don’t have it on adult computers. But you can have seperate logins for adults versus children.

    Most people probably would have been open to a compromise.
