The Dubious Logic of Book Banning

An Opinion Piece by Tanner Vea in The Bard Observer looks at that Superintendent that removed a book called Geography Club from the library collections of Curtis Junior High and Curtis Senior High. Tanner says “If we are to take Ms. Banks at her word and accept the explanation that Geography Club must go because it encourages high-risk behaviors, we must then insist that the school district of University Place apply the same standard to every written work on its shelves. People do risky things in many highly regarded pieces of literature, and if we are to send a strong consistent message to all our students about one type of high-risk behavior, we must send a strong consistent message about all types of high-risk behavior. If Ms. Banks and officials in University Place fail to meet this standard of proof, they cannot maintain their current alibi.”
