The Bachelorette in Academe

Sarah writes “Today’s Chronicle of Higher Education has a first-person piece about the problems single people have when they land jobs in a rural area. The article’s conclusion is especially interesting, as it relates the work culture of academia in general to that of the library world. To quote: ‘Early on, I realized that academe has no office culture. I know office culture is always seen as a joke but I realized that as a single person, I was going to need some interaction at work. Academe couldn’t offer me that — but a library could.'”

    I especially disliked the part where the author said to the librarian, “You’re so bright, why didn’t you get your PhD in history?” Hmph!

    Well, we are talking about somebody who, while she claims to be looking for a “social life”, appears to be entirely focused on the search for a romantic partner. So she’s not so bright, herself.

    If only she’d asked an (oh-so-bright) librarian back when she was in Rural Town, the librarian might have been able to help her find social groups and book clubs were she could have gained a social life. (Okay, okay, the snark is undeserved. But neither was her comment about librarians. The only reason for a bright person to become a librarian is because she’s single and lonely? Fooey. And what’s with this whole “only single people need social interaction at work” thing?)

    Be kind to us city folk
    I didn’t really like the tone of the author of that article either, but I can sympathize with her problems. If you are used to the bright lights of the city, small town America seems rather dull in comparison.

    One of my wife’s patients lives in a podunk town (Minier – pronounced “Miner” go figure) and she was talking about her 6th grade son. Apparently he was so excited because for his birthday he got not only an XBox, but HIS VERY OWN SHOTGUN. Apparently he was upset he couldn’t take it to school to show it off. Damn libruls!
