Texas librarians show wild side in calendar

So much for the stereotype. Texas librarians are baring their skin and revealing their tattoos – all to raise disaster relief money to help damaged libraries.

    Swapping one stereotype for another.
    The “sexy librarian” is as much a stereotype as the buttoned-down librarian, and both miss the reality of librarians as real, live, individual human beings. Of course, little else is to be expected from society’s perceptions of a largely female-dominated profession.

    That said, regardless of what society thinks, I hope the fundraiser is a successful one.

    Well, sure, “sexy librarian” may be a stereotype and may have to do with the percentage of females in librarianship–but if you read the whole story, you get this paragraph (which the San Francisco Chronicle included in its copy of this story):

    The Tattooed Ladies of TLA 18-month calendar is a follow-up to the successful Men of Texas Libraries calendar, which raised $US9000…to help libraries damaged by hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

    So, in this case, TLA isn’t pushing a one-sex stereotype…

    Well…Not Even for 1 Hour
    I like the idea of a calendar to raise money, I like the fact that the librarians starred in it…

    But (and this is a Big one for me), the calendar isn’t very attractive, and after perusing the website, with a few of the photos posted on it I can definitely say…these photos sure as hades are nothing I want to look at, not for 18 months, not for 12 months, not for 1 month, not for 1 day…not even an hour.
