Some college libraries fall prey to scammers

Anonymous Patron writes “The Chronicle Online Has Picked Up on the fact that bogus publishing companies and bill-collecting operations have college librarians across the country reading up on a new subject: financial scams.”

    Been there…
    I had a bad experience with this type of scam at a public library. I received a call that they needed to verify our contact information, etc. Then after they got all that information they put me through to “billing” and tried to get me to say that I could authorize payments. They got really mad when I kept saying “no”.

    Unfortunately, I was too green at the time to hang up on a potential supplier, so they finally forced me to say ‘yes’ before they would release the call. But it did turn out well, in the end, my library knew of this type of scam and supported me. It was a high-pressure situation, though.
