Anonymous Patron writes “Slashdot points out Google Print results are now beginning to appear in search results. They point out An easy way to turn up these results is to simply type “book”, and then whatever you want to search for. For instance, book origin of species will turn up the full text of Charles Darwin’s controversial treatise.”

    Libray Scanning on Google Print
    The Slashdot article is a bit misleading, in that few of the items available on Google Print are from their scanning of library holdings.

    In one of the Computers in Libraries sessions last week (I think Greg Notess was the presenter), it was pointed out that Google Print has two different sources for books.

    • Content from publishers.
      If these items are found, there is a notice about on the right indicating that the material is under copyright, and you can only browse a few pages.
    • Scans of library materials.
      If these items show up and are old enough to be in the public domain, then a user can browse the full text. Insead of a copyright notice, the words “Google Print” appears on the right.

    At the moment, it seems that most of the results fom Google Print are from Publishers. To make things more challenging, Google Print only displays up to 3 books for any given search, so it is difficult to know if they might have a public domain copy of something buried in their system. Google Print results from the library scanning project are difficult to find, however, you can see how it works by searching for the example Google prvides: Books and Culture

    e-books from free sources
    What I see are the e-texts from Gutenberg and the e-text repository at virginia.edu. This is not really Google print. Very misleading story.
