Security Cameras in Libraries

There is an article about a Louisiana library that has just installed security cameras to watch low trafficked areas of the library.

    We have an array of hidden cameras in our library. They’ve been used to obtain and document evidence against certain people.

    I did a little researching and it looks like this is perfectly legal (even places with changing rooms like underwear stores and tanning parlors can record people without their consent or notification) but it still strikes me as strange.

    Many stores place “you are being watched” notices around the premesis as a courtesy (plus they may also help deter theft) — kinda like the “this call may be monitored for quality assurance” recording on some phone systems.

    The whole concept of underwear stores creeps me out. I don’t want people trying on underwear.

    I think cameras are fine, the bank has them, the toll plaza has them, the pharmacy and the convenience store has them. I would probably put a sign on the door about security cameras, but if it keeps strange people from doing strange things in the stacks it seems alright to me. (at least until I start doing strange things in the stacks)
