No Rules Library

There is a community reading room in Blue River, Oregon that is open most hours and is often unstaffed. Story here. If libraries in other cities were to open similar rooms it might be a good way to promote the library. If the books were donations you would not have to worry about them being stolen and the people of the community could have a place they could read 24/7.

    It would also be a good way to eliminate shelf space shortages.

    If you put it in the “burbs” and not downtown the homeless might not know that it exist. Then you just have to worry about surburban teenagers messing it up. This is what caused the one in Oregon to be locked overnight.

    A homeless shelter is the library you have downtown with internet access. If you don’t have computer terminals at the reading room that will keep most of the homeless at the library and not in the reading room.

    I live in Clearwater, Florida. They just opened a new $20MM library. I hope the homeless like it.

    Read the story

    Oh, I do read the linked stories.

    I wish all libraries could be open all the time, I wish that this one could too but some ne’re-do-wells ruined it for everyone. Too bad this country is deteriorating so.

    When I win the lottery I am moving to some small town and opening my own library with my own rules exactly like Mrs. O’Brien’s rules.

    If you don’t like my collection go away, it is my library. If I want King and King and you don’t tough. I’ll probably have to pay a lot for the security guards. Of course there will be several copies of Sir Thomas Moore’s Utopia
