A library established by nuns in the port city of Oran in western Algeria over 40 years ago remains a precious facility for the people of the region.
Like the rest of Algeria, the population of Oran is almost totally Muslim.
The Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Africa, formerly known as the White Sisters, started a small library in Oran in 1964, with books on women, Africa and Islam, mainly for college and secondary school students.
“Today, all is computerized, open to university students, men and women,” says Sr Clementine Mukampabuka, a Rwandese nun who heads the library. “The library specializes in literature, languages and psychology. Five hundred teachers and lecturers are members.”
