Second Master’s the New Glass Ceiling?

There’s been some discussion on LITA-L (login required) today about an apparent trend towards mid-level academic library job postings asking for a second masters degree. After all, when you can get highly qualified candidates to work for peanuts, why not? So much for that whole “terminal degree” thing. What’s the worst job ad you’ve seen?

    Tell you what…

    Allow me to use the master’s degree I DO have, and maybe we’ll talk about a second one…

    “Sorry, I can’t help you with your research. My director has told me to stay here and make sure these 30+ Jr. High kids don’t use the Internet without their parent’s permission, or I get fired… And unfortunately, there is no one ELSE here to watch the kids while I help you, because the director formed a bunch of committees so the staff would feel more like they have a say in what goes on at their place of work. So everyone else is in committee meetings trying to decide on the wording for the mission statements of their respective staff committees. Public service is apparently NOT our top priority.”

    Oh, and the worst job ad I’ve ever seen had the word “LIBARIAN” very clearly written across the top of the page…

    If I sound bitter, its because people are pissing me off…

    Do note that the job in question was high level
    While the discussion was interesting (particularly in that there’s no big secret that many academic librarian postings expect a subject masters–but consider that these are frequently for tenure positions, for which a teaching equivalent would require a Ph.D.), the definition of “mid-level” may be confusing: The job ad that raised the alarum stated a starting salary of $90,000 and up.
