R.I. Libraries’ Patrons can now Request Removal of Internet Filtering

  The revised policy follows a critical report issued in April by the Rhode Island affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, which said the libraries were discouraging or blocking access to “constitutionally protected material.”

Under the new policy, adult patrons receive computerized notices that alert them of their right to ask a librarian to turn off Internet blocking software. The software itself has been revised to filter out most sexual and adult content, but not nudity.

Prohibiting all sites containing nudity “had blocked access to a wide range of medical and other information,” the ACLU said.
