Porn replaces Disney from county library

News From Florida: When Shirley White-Satcher’s 12-year-old son sat down Sunday night to watch what she thought was a Disney movie checked out from the library, what he saw instead horrified her.
The movie, “Home on the Range,” ended up being a graphic porno flick that came from the Alachua County Headquarters Library at 401 E. University Ave. in downtown Gainesville.
“I stepped out of the room for 30 seconds after the movie started playing and he ran in and said, ‘Mommy, there’s nasty stuff on the TV,’ ” White-Satcher told The Sun Wednesday evening.

    Why did the woman think to contact the media first before the police or the library? If she really wanted to get the word out and protect others, it seems odd that she declined to make an official report until after the media had been fed the story. I would think that she would want the police and library to investigate to see if that was the only tape switch made at the library and start seeing who might have done it before contacting the media.

    I just posted a comment on that story at Walt at random–crediting Jim Romenesko’s Obscure Store and Reading Room instead of LISNews because, well, of the order of my bookmarks.

    I agree that it’s odd that the mother went directly to media and/or police instead of the library. I would also note that, despite what the librarian said, it’s trivially simple to overwrite a prerecorded videocassette. I’d guess it happens more often–and that most patrons and parents would just quietly let the library know there’s a problem, not make a Media Event out of it.

    I had friends who worked at a regional video chain back in the mid 80s who discovered something similar. As in this story, some patron had been recording stuff on the otherwise blank few minutes of tape at the end of many rentals. Close to 15% of the tapes they scanned had been modified that way. In this case, the content was a little more artistic. He had an old 8-bit computer (Atari or Commodore or something) that could output a TV signal. He had programmed it to do psychedelic color-cycling patterns. There wasn’t a whole lot of duplication among the samples they found, either. On some of them, you could even see the command prompt as he started the graphic program up. A few tapes had Atari 2600 or ColecoVision games on them, but they figured that they weren’t the same guy.
