“at your fingertips”

Laura Crossett: “I love the internet. I love that libraries are one of the few places in the world that provide free internet access. But when we talk about electronic resources and the wonders of the web and putting the world at people’s fingertips, I think it’s good to remember that for a significant number of people, we’re giving them an hour of that world at a time, quite probably on Internet Explorer 6.”

    Thats very true, but…
    there are also people in the world, indeed in major cities in major countries that don’t have enough to eat or drink. The worlds not perfect.

    Yes the world is changing and there are always going to be the information poor. It’s always been the same though in terms of extra information on tv shows etc. It used to be (in the UK), for more information go to page xxx on Teletext. What if you didn’t have a tv that could show teletext? What if you couldn’t afford the self addressed envelope and stamp to post off for more information if you’d managed to copy the postal address down? You still had to wait for the post to come to you.

    You might only get half an hour in the public library but in that half an hour you can do so many things that would be unthijnkable. Of course it’s not comparable to ‘us’ who have access all day every day at our fingertips, but imagine not even having that half an hour.
