Partnering the Public Library with the Community Center

Marlene writes “Here’s a great example of recent innovative and creative design ideas of public libraries. Developers broke ground in Maryvale, Arizona in July for their new community center and library buildings that will be connected with a breezeway. The Maryvale Community Center/Palo Verde Library branch will be part of the Phoenix Public Library system and Phoenix Parks and Recreation central district.

On a personal note, I recently interviewed for a management position at Ohio’s Willoughby-Eastlake Public Library in their new building , to be opening in October 2003. The building, owned by the City of Willoughby Hills, will be used for community meetings and activities as well as house the library station. The library station will feature a drive-up window and lock boxes so that patrons can collect library materials during off hours.
The physical location is great, because the City of Willoughby Hills Community Center and Library is right next to the park and soccer fields, so drivers waiting for practice to end can come into the library and use the listening centers.

I like the idea of combining a community center and public libraries in the same building. Folks drawn to the library for books, end up finding out more about the community activities, and people going to a Lion’s Club meeting can easily drop in for a visit to the library.

I spoke with the managers at the Centerville Branch Library & Community Center last week in preparation for my interview and they both were enthusiatic about their positions in the new endeavor. Their building opened in the Summer of 2002 and is located in a suburb of Atlanta. Each entity retains it’s own management, yet, cooperate and collaborate with each other.”
