Parental filters for the Internet

Did you know Ohio and Texas are the top two states where child porn is downloaded online? I didn’t, but This One from an NBC station in Cleveland says it’s true. County Prosecutor Bill Mason and his office are now in charge of managing a task force across the state. They are trying clamp down on predators. Parents can help their crusade by taking control of the computer.

    odd curve
    Interesting article but its more about protecting kids from child molesters using filters then it is about child pornography. I imagine the criminals in question come from the same pool but it the article doesn’t really bother to say that.

    It is highly likely that Ohio is viewed as having more of a problem, because the police there are better equipped than most to deal with it, esepcially the Xenia Ohio Police, every other story I read of them busting someone involves that department.

    Scare tactics
    In any analysis of statistics someone (or something) has to stand first and someone has to come last. What this piece of scaremongering does not report is what the rate of downloading child porn is in Texas and Ohio and how they compare against the other states in the country. Another thing it does that should be highly suspect is to intimate that every freak who downloads child porn is necessarily a predator and molester. This is an unwarranted assumption; and in keeping with the anti-sexuality zeitgeist of conservatism. Thirdly: a molester can’t approach a child every second with the intent of molesting that child. He can only maybe pass one child per second on the street and keep moving to pass the next one. Lastly, there is:

    Its a safe bet that its on their mind.

    Child molesters, both inside and outside families, tend to target vulnerable children: youngsters with disabilities and poor communications skills, troubled kids whose reports adults distrust, and children whose parents are absent or inattentive.

    All the more reason to have such safeguards in a public library where *all* parents are usually absent until 5 or 5:30.

    Nor does it mention that most children are molested by someone known to the family: a relative, a boyfriend, family friend, or step-father (Not to put all the blame on men, but the majority of pedophiles are male).
