Odd queries test reference librarians

Did you know obscure questions keep librarians on their toes almost daily. Librarians nationwide answer more than 7 million questions a week, according to the American Library Association. A single-file line of such questioners would stretch from Boston to San Francisco, according to an ALA spokeswoman.

    So if there was an international database
    of all the impossible questions and answers…
    –with documentation of the sources
    (there’s probably already a listserv
    somewhere)

    It would save us all alot of runnin around
    and be vastly entertaining as well.

    In case you don’t know, there is a listserv called Stumpers.

    Also, many libraries keep “fugitive fact files” — at least that’s what we called it at a library where I once worked — and some of these are online. Here’s an example.
