New director of Multnomah libraries gets acquainted

The Oregonian Takes A Look at Molly Raphael the new director of Multnomah Public in Oregon.

People inside and outside the libraries want to know that she has what it takes to run their first-class system — and that she’s worth the $138,000 salary that became a political firestorm for county Chairwoman Diane Linn.

When Linn negotiated Raphael’s salary at 27 percent higher than that of the previous director, county commissioners who were unaware of the salary deal raised loud public criticism of Linn. Raphael started work three days before Christmas, her arrival dimmed by skepticism.

Raphael kept silent during the political squabble over salary that played out over four months. She says the controversy was difficult for her, and now she hopes that people will begin to see her as a person instead of only a “salary issue.”
