Library’s Black History Month Display Raises Hackles

An Anonymous Patron points us to this Houston Chronicle Story
about a Black History Month display at the
Brownwood (TX) library containing items and images that some residents found offensive.

“The collection includes books such as Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe and Free Man by Elizabeth Yates, antique dolls and African artwork. The inclusion of Little Black Sambo — a century-old literary character whose illustrations are seen as racist caricatures — was among the items considered most offensive.”

The woman responsible for the display defended it, but library Mat McConnell said that the display lacked context and would not reappear next year.
