More on the misspelled California library mural

    That’s not the way I read the story
    I read that same story this morning over coffee, and I didn’t draw the conclusion that the spellings were intentional–in fact, if you read the final paragraph, it’s fairly clear: She just didn’t know or care how the names were spelled.

    I consider myself a humanist and humanities person, and am deeply offended by the idea that the words don’t matter. But then, I suppose that sort of response is better than saying “Duh. You mean it isn’t Eistein?”

    spelling mistakes
    I wonder what the artist would do if the city decided to misspell her name on the check… I’m mean, just to show that they understand her artistic side and all…

    Polemic
    Alquilar, who lived in Santa Cruz before moving to Florida, could not be reached for comment Thursday. A message on her studio answering machine said only “non-polemic” phone calls would be returned.

    Non-polemic????? Big words for an artist that cannot spell.

    You are right — she apparently said that “she seemed to have no idea the names were spelled incorrectly.”

    Cheap publicity
    This story is making the rounds of the blogs, sort of like Dan Rather and the phony faxes–words will mean what she wants them to mean. She’s getting a lot of publicity for an artist probably no one ever heard of.
