Library to hand over children left after hours to Police

Children left at the Fayetteville, Arkansas, Public Library at the close of business hours will be turned over to the police in accordance with a policy adopted by the Library Board of Trustees on Monday. The problem with children being left in the building at closing time is becoming more of a problem in the new building, said Louise Schaper, library executive director.

do what with them? Drive them home I suppose and give the parents a good talking to. If I were the cops I would not be real happy with that.

I think they should be give a double cappachino and a couple of candy bars and then returned to the parents.

Oooo, hopping the kids up on sugar and caffiene then sending them home would be just punishment.

I’d guess that it would depend on the cop and your local ordinances to decide what happens with the kids who get left behind. We are allowed to call the cops, if the child is left after hours and attempts to contact a guardian are unsuccessful.

Well, . . . if it turns out to become a consistent pattern of behaviour some parents could end up facing charges of child endangerment or abandonment. Pretty serious stuff. Child protection services are really supposed to be an absolute bitch to deal with, too. If you watch Judging Amy, Maxine’s office doesn’t go nearly half as far as some lunatics.

In our county, depending on the age of the child, the police will and have contacted the Dept. of Family Services. Leaving a 4-year-old alone in a public place can be considered abandonment.

And if it’s a matter of a lack of child care, DFS can connect the parents to available resources.
