Library patrons notice effects of lower funding

Anonymous Patron writes Cincinnati Enquirer reports The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, which serves a declining population with 42 locations, also is wrestling with how to manage with less money.

Ohio has 251 library systems, and the state provides most of their income. State contributions, however, have dropped from a high of $496.4 million in 2001 to an expected $452.6 million this year.

Libraries are bracing for an additional 5 percent cut in 2006 if the General Assembly approves Gov. Bob Taft’s $51.3 billion proposed budget. House leaders will unveil their version of the state budget this week.”
