Library Forgoes Paid Staff in Favor of Materials

The Lantana (FL) Library is proud of its library staff, 3 of whom are paid and 19 of whom are volunteers. According to city librarian Fred Patchett, “Volunteering is a good strategy for somebody having trouble finding work. When they do get an interview, it fills the gap in their résumé.     Bitter? OK, I am
    Bully for them. My district has proved that even when you substitute volunteers for paid staff, it is still possible to reduce funding for materials.
    But I’m not a bit bitter.
