The Basehor Sentinel in Bonner Springs,KS Reports Basehor police served a 41-year-old Basehor man with a letter last week that revokes the man’s library privileges and bans him from the building indefinitely.
The man is charged in Basehor Municipal Court with a sole count of lewd and lascivious act. The charge stems from a statement a woman gave police April 11 that she witnessed the man fondling himself while at a computer inside the library.
you’re not going to believe this but…
Unless I’m missing something in the report the library is wrong to do this.
1. He hasn’t been convicted yet.
2. There’s only one incident.
3. There’s only one eye-witness.
We’ve banned individuals for life but there was a long chain of events leading up to that decision. This seems too quick by far.
Re:you’re not going to believe this but…
The paper was skimpy on details, Greg, I do agree with you. We’ve had incidents in our library (a few) also where people were banned for life (more often just for periods of a year or less) but we’ve had administrators and third parties sit in on the decision (and occasionally also come witness the behavior… we never take one person’s word for it.)
That being said…one incident, you’re out, bub… But I would be wary taking just one patron’s word against another regarding patron behavior. I would even take some staff members with a grain of salt, sadly enough.
Libraries, meet the sixth amendment?
It was brought up with a previous banning, I believe of this guy — no wait, it was this guy, definately — the question of why libraries have the right to ban people without any checks and balances to appeal such decisions. I’m with Greg on this one(!)
I’m confused …
Was he banned “for life” or “indefinitely”? Those seem like 2 different things to me.
In any case, I suspect that Blake just liked having Basehor repeated several times in an item. (Please, please tell me it’s pronounced “base whore”!)
Due process
Especially since they are revoking a property right.
Unless he no longer has to pay taxes to the library… 😀

Re:I’m confused …
I read it that his library privileges (borrowing rights) were revoked for life… and he was banned from entering the building indefinitely… Though I would think having someone enter the building without the possibility of ever having library borrowing privileges would be inviting trouble.
I could be wrong though.

It’s pronounced Base UR
