    No, I won’t avoid them. As I librarian why should I limit myself to only free information? Some info has a cost in $, some has a cost in having to register. I will admit that I don’t register at all the sites. If you link to something in the LA Times I am not going to read it because I find their registration to be a little to much a pain in the butt. But I don’t get on and complain if someone links to a LA Times story.

    The world of info is large then the “free internet” and we should be aware of the stories that are happening there.

    Some of us have serious ethical issues with “subscription required” sites. Furthermore, they don’t go well with a free service such as this.

    But I don’t get on and complain if someone links to a LA Times story.

    I was more ticked that it wasn’t noted as subscription-only than anything. If it was so noted, I wouldn’t have bothered to post anything at all. But if I’m going to post, I might as well plead for avoiding the damned things altogether. 🙂

    This is meant as a good natured response, questions are in no means meant as sarcasm, please do not read them that way. That being said here come the questions.

    What is the big ethical problem with subscription sites? Sure they are asking for personal info but if you don’t want to give it you do not have to read the stories. You may respond that you do not want to live in a world where to get information you have to register everywhere. The problem is that the newspapers have to make a profit for what they are creating. Instead of fighting against registration you should be asking papers to charge you. Then you have a choice anonymous with cash or known without cash. There is no free ride. I would love if more people would create free quality online information. You can be one of those people. I just don’t think we should expect for people to just give it away.
