Librarian Explains Anarchism

Chuck Munson, a librarian who runs the website infoshop.org does a Q & A with the New York Times about anarchism. Munson, who lives in Kansas City, is in NYC for protests at the Republic National Convention.

    Anachronist or anarchist?
    I hate to see a story without comments so here goes: I read the story in the NY Times and when I finished reading, I was left unmoved. There may well be more to the anarchists’ movement but this particular fellow certainly didn’t light a flame under me.

    Should I feel sorry for him? I’m sure he wouldn’t want me to, but I couldn’t help but leave this article feeling let down. I just don’t see the hope in the anarchist movement except to encourage the rest of us to come up with realistic suggestions for our country’s future.

    Actually, although I would agree that his answers weren’t necessarily that fantastic or imaginative, I would have to vote the New York Times “reporter”‘s questions as among the stupidest I’ve ever seen. Anybody would be hard-pressed to give good answers to such ridiculous questions.

    ffirehorse, although I didn’t find the article inspiring, I also did not find the reporter’s questions to be the “stupidest” questions nor the most ridiculous. One has to remember that, most likely, this reporter was setting the subject up for the great majority of readers. “Do anarchists differ from other radicals?”; “If there is no government or state, how would order be maintained?”; ” How would we get goods and services?” and, certainly, “Do you disavow violence?” , as well as the question about the “evolution” of anarchism, don’t seem that odd to me.

    What would have made this piece much more interesing would have been the follow up to these answers. For many, the idea of an anarchist is very foreign and hard to even fathom.

    Perhaps you ought to write a letter to the editor about the shortcomings of this article, in order to shed more light on it. I’m afraid I’m quite ignorant on today’s anarchists.. And I certainly would have liked to have learned more from this interview.

    You have a good point. I didn’t think of it from that perspective. It’s true that when I look at the questions a second time, they don’t seem stupid. I withdraw that characterization.
