Lamentable State of Montreal’s Libraries

Here’s a piece from the Montreal Gazette about how and why Montreal has “the worst library system in Canada to this day.” It’s a weird, long-brewing story involving a philanthropic ventriloquist, a censorious bishop, and the refusal of a gift from Andrew Carnegie. As an aside, our very own Kathleen de la Pena McCook is quoted in the story, as an expert on public library history.

    Montreal
    I only spent about three days in Montreal there but I thought the city was fantastic. For about two to three years after that visit I would daydream and read online real estate listings for Montreal. I would regularly read the Gazette, too. Not to mention novels like “City of Ice” by Farrow.

    I didn’t bother reading this article though. Maybe later.

    Farrow did a sequel with the same characters but I do not recall the title. “Ice Lake” maybe.

    I visited in July, and the city has tons of stuff to do during the summer months. Montreal’s underground passages make the winter much more tolerable for the people living and working downtown.
