Kenyan Mobile Library Service Comes via Camel

The poor and rural areas populated by nomadic tribes in northeastern Kenya receive mobile library services delivered by camel. Tables, chairs, tents, and books are brought out by the Kenya National Library to serve communities up to 15 km away from the North East Province capital city of Garissa.

The target population of these library services are children and youth, girls in particular. Says provincial librarian Sheikh Rashid Mohamed Farah, “Right now, we have quite (a) number of them in the universities — a good number of young boys and girls from this province who have gone to the university as a result of library services which we are providing.”
