In Boston, Mayor and Librarian Clash Over Control

If this city is known for both intellectual heft and political blood sport, the Boston Public Library, one of its proudest institutions, aligns itself strictly with the former. But in recent months, the august library has been at the center of some nasty political tussles. “Given the scope and depth of the problems with which the mayor has to deal,” Ms. Spiro said, “he should not be focusing his attentions on this institution.”

    Hrmmm
    No city is perfect and, of course, no city government is perfect either.

    Yet, why does this not surprise me that this anti-intellectual and anti-library crap is happening in a city known for freaking out because of a few Lite-Brites depicting cartoon characters? Then they went on to make that seem sane when they blew up a “suspicious device” as a precautionary measure even though they were told that the “suspicious device” was actually a “traffic counter” installed by “department of transportation.”

    Seriously, the mayor wants to take over the trust funds because of transparency, but the city doesn’t really look at those trust funds when they audit the library every year? Sounds like willful ignorance to me.
