Hypnotism assaults at library raise safety questions, need for vigilance

JB writes “Police continue to investigate incidents involving several Northwestern students who allege they were hypnotized and, in at least one case, sexually assaulted in the University Library.


University Librarian David Bishop said no changes in security have been made at the library since the last reported incident two months ago, but University Police say they have increased patrols there.


“I’m not sure that I could say that anything is being done in response to this,” Bishop said.


A female victim reported to police that on July 22 a man hypnotized her after asking her to help with a research project. He then “spoke to and touched the victim in an inappropriate manner,” according to a UP community crime alert….

    Wonder if he’s related to the shoe thief?
    I used to work there–for years there was a weirdo going around grabbing women’s shoes when they’d slip them off their feet.

    It’s a big library and there are some major secluded areas. The stairwells in the individual towers would be where I’d expect something bad to happen someday–at least when I was there in the 1980s and 90s, they had very little use and in the South tower you could go to a bottom area where you couldn’t get out. There are a ton of little study rooms that are easy to hide in, which is my guess as to where this guy is taking his rather gullible victims.

    Unfortunately libraries are easy targets
    It’s a shame that libraries are such easy targets for people like this. Hypnotism is a new angle to catch victims. I’ve heard of the show thieves, heavy breathers, people with mirrors on their shoes, etc… but never a rogue hypnotist.

    The library where I went to college had(has) a large window on the front of the building that looks right into a study room. There was a gentleman who would flash from the window. He was later caught outside Kent State’s library sitting in his car naked. It takes all kinds, I guess.
