Focus on Cookbook Vandalism

New cookbooks are coming to the shelves of the Bloomington, IL library, thanks to LISNews reporter and librarian Rochelle Hartman, who brought attention to the problem that struck her library last summer when unknown vandals cut out as many as 40 pages from assorted cookbooks. Friends organizations from other states have also pitched in to replace the damaged editions. Here’s the good news.

    if there are any titles you still need. We get tons of donations and I can have them put aside for you if the come in.

    Frankly you can have all the cookbooks rotten little things that they are all different sizes and shapes never stay neatly on the shelves anyway!

    We actually got tons of donations–a lot of them unsuitable for the collection. Used cookbooks can be pretty krunky. I know mine are. We’re trying to emphasize that what we can most use is cash, but I imagine after this story we’ll get another influx of books. Our Friends group has certainly benefitted–lots of booty for the book sales.

    We put out a display of the vandalized cookbooks, and it was great to see the reactions of outrage and disbelief.

    Just another reason why libraries would be so much better if we didn’t have to let in the public . It amazes me that people are so cheap that they won’t spend the money to make a copy, or are so *$#@ that they won’t write down the information they want.

    And don’t get me started on what happens to the books on the occult, or abortion, or any other target of the vandals.

    As an addendum, there was a smiley after the first sentence when I wrote it. I love the public, really. Well, most of the time, anyway.

    I keep waiting for a restaurant that specializes in home cooking to open up, since most of the gutted books were down-home type cookbooks. Or, maybe a tailgate/bbq/deep-fried catering service. Not one Jacques Pepin or Julia Child title was touched.
