Everyone vs. Sony BMG

As a follow-up to earlier stories about Sony BMG selling music CDs with cracking software, lawsuits have been filed against the company by the Texas Attorney General, California and New York consumer unions, and the EFF. BBC News has a rundown on the current litigation.

    The irony…

    The irony is that the people they are harming most by this (aside from themselves and their repuation) are the people who actualy purchased CDs, rather than looking for a way to download the files illegally.

    Yes, they were trying to prevent people from uploading music– since one upload is more damaging to them than one download– but people doing the uploading are more likely to be computer savey and thus more likely to be able to defend against this, and to recover from it.

    Thus the segment of their customer base they are hurting most are those that 1) purchased the music legally 2) are not trying to do anything with the CDs other than listen to them on their computers. Hello?

    (And what a wonderful way to get people to eschew illegal file services– by showing them that a legally purchased CD is more dangerous to their computer’s security than any drive-by spyware download attempt that may happen on an illegal MP3 site. Brilliant marketing here, people; brilliant PR.)
