Seems that the Government has priorities other than protecting and preserving our nation’s digital archives (who needs transcripts?). After the February 15 passage of P.L. 110-5, $47 million “of the unobligated balances available for the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program” (NDIIPP) was rescinded.
Here is Karen Schneider’s take on the cuts and here’s LJ’s report.
priorties
From Schneider’s post:
I think digitization of government resources is very important and certainly in a post-9/11 world but her focus on the cultural resources shows her understanding of government to be as simplistic as her spelling of it. How many Americans think preserving a digital backlog of public television is a high priority right now? For that matter would they ever consider it a high priority?
And not for nothing but you can’t “foment war with hostile nations”. They’re hostile, they don’t require fomenting. Its like giving viagra to Fred Garvin.
