Jane Elliott
Jane Elliott did a blue eyes/brown eyes
racism exercise in the 60s that was
both challenging and deeply disturbing…
yet very effective in demonstrating
the negative power of racism.
The librarian was following Jane Elliott’s
controversial yet powerful example.
Re:Jane Elliott
Using eye color, especially in a community where most are WASP, may be acceptable. But it would be far better to assign the children to groups randomly if you wanted to show the effects of preference on the individual or group.
Dividing children up by race–would you recommend it for any other history lesson–The Crusades, perhaps? WWII? The holocaust? Pogroms? Illegal immigration?
eye color only works in w* areas
I concur.
But maybe we’re trying to teach white guilt, so they can get into good liberal colleges ;>
