Does anyone still think the Internet is exciting?

Laurel Wellman, in a SFGate.com Column says: “Let’s all disconnect from the Internet! It’s nothing but a well-known source of contagion, and frankly, the whole thing is starting to get a bit old anyway.

…apart from shut-ins who spend their time downloading movie trailers, very few people are deriving much actual pleasure from the once-vaunted information superhighway.

    Actually, given this columnist’s track record in the San Francisco Chronicle (“SFGate” is the Chronicle’s website), I’d say that the column nails down two things:

    1. The internet is no longer the Hot New Thing, Life, or a reasonable All-Consuming Passion for grownups who have friends or who can see outside their windows.

    2. It’s no less of a useful tool than it was yesterday or last week.

    She’s after the Hot New In Thing. She’s right: The Internet ain’t it any more. So?

    I dunno about that. We turn bunches of people away from the library every day because we don’t have enough access. And I talk to patrons every day for whom the internet is still a new shiny thing that they are afraid to touch or can’t get enough of.

    If I remember correctly internet penetration is at about 40% of the population. I still find the internet very exciting. Of course, I use it more then manyh people and like making it do things for me, not just regurgitate entertainment content.
