Delete our cultural heritage?

    our Burning Man
    Once every ten years librarians should gather for a funeral to mourn the loss of information that has deteriorated over the previous decade. We should offer counciling to fellow citizens who feel they have somehow ‘lost something’ to time. Less traumatic than say Alexandria burning to the ground, its still obvious that the slow decay of time is stealing away man’s oppurtunities to succeed. We need a time of consolation in order to move past those missed oppurtunities and hopefully grab onto to new ones before they too fall by the wayside. We’ll find a giant open area somewhere, a desert maybe. We’ll call it “The Decaying Library” and put together a giant compost pile to represent the death of information and its reintergration into the cosmos. We could have mass viewings of VH1’s “I Love The…” series and revel in things we already spent too much time and energy on to make up for everything else.

    Solution?
    Maybe if we had the money and institutional support to sustain functional digital preservation programs, we could help slow down the decay.

    Digital preservation, though it seems yet to be in its infancy, is often overlooked or, worse, discounted as an oxymoron.
