Although dated in 2002, this article from The Age, an Australian newspaper, outlines the reasons for the decision to grant librarians in News South Wales a pay increase. The decision was extremely controversial and has not yet spread to other states in Australia.

This is an interesting article, and I hope more people check it out. I especially liked the fact that they compared librarians’ salaries with geologists in their attempt to find a balance. That seems like a fair comparison to me. I also enjoyed the “work-value principles” they used in addition to a raw comparison.
I wish the unions good luck in applying this victory to other professions, and I hope that someday gender pay equity will make it to the U.S….
