The seven candidates seeking seats on the Cook Memorial Public Library District board have varied opinions about whether children should be allowed to check out R-rated videos.
Some believe libraries should follow the Motion Picture Association of America’s rating system, while others maintain all patrons should have the same access to materials.
that depends
Are they the R rated kind with gay people kissing or boobs? Or just the regular, OK kind with violence, blood and murder and stuff?
It those boobs and homosexuals that will ruin a child. Want to know what’s worse?
Homosexual boobs.
Kids shouldn’t take out movies
Kids shouldn’t be able to take out videos, period. The kids will lose them and videos are expensive. The kids at my library lose their library cards every other day.
Of course, there are other problems with ratings. What if a movie isn’t rated? How do you judge it? Having just adults check out movies removes these problems.
Re:Kids shouldn’t take out movies
Or you could just cover them with a coat of shellac. The videos, I mean. I guess the kids too. Although encasing them in Lucite might neutralize the danger better.
Come to think of it it, everything gets worn out when you let people check it out.
We could just buy stuff and keep it and not let anyone touch it. We’ll just keep it in a room behind a velvet rope and scold people for looking at it too long.
Re:Kids shouldn’t take out movies
Well, I was pointing out problems and solutions. I work in a library where lots of things are stolen, so I guess it’s made me anal retentive about materials. If kids are allowed to take out videos, then it’s up to the circulation staff and reference staff to regulate that. I’ve worked in a library that was like that, and now I work in one that doesn’t allow kids to take videos/DVDs. I guess you can’t win either way. Restricting is akin to censorship. Letting kids take out movies puts a unneeded strain on staff to be decision makers.
Re:Kids shouldn’t take out movies
Please, pleeeeease, Chuck, show us the “straw man” fallacy again! Shellac! That’s REAL arguin’ for ya!
I would not be just a nothin’ my head all full of stuffin’
My heart all full of pain.
I would dance and be merry, life would be a ding-a-derry,
If I only had a brain.
Shellac!
1. A has occurred (or will or might occur); therefore
2. B will inevitably happen. (slippery slope)
3. B is wrong; therefore
4. A is wrong. (straw man)
“Velvet Rope!” It’s too good.
or…
You could do what my system does and let parents decide if they want to give their child permission to check out videos.
