Camera phones will be high-precision scanners

The software, developed by NEC and the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) in Japan, goes further than existing cellphone camera technology by allowing entire documents to be scanned simply by sweeping the phone across the page. Article here.

    Copyright issues
    Anything that exists in the audio visual world can (or will) be easily digitally reproduced. There will be those who wish to suppress such technology but what will have to happen is to revise copyright law.

    Revising copyright law is a real challenge to western civilization. There is a lot of money tied up in “royalties� on intellectual property. There are many people who do not care about it (globally) and will “harvest� digitally anything they want.

    Revising the law won’t help given the ease, as you’ve pointed out, of reproduction. What needs to happen is new business models. If businesses start taking advantage of the new technology (as the BBC is doing) instead of fighting it (as the MPAA does), they can get in on the ground floor and define the terms with which they want to do business. It’s not an easy path they’ve got to walk, but them what don’t bother will be left behind when all the law changing they fight for doesn’t change the reality of zero-cost copies.
