Book Gift to Educators

The Journal-News reports that A Kids’ Guide to America’s Bill of Rights: Curfews, Censorship & The 100 Pound Giant, has been donated to a number of New York school libraries. The book explains our civil liberties to fifth and sixth grade students.

    Ironic
    This is so ironic since students lose their rights as soon as they step onto school property. Different schools have strict rules on clothing (I’m not talking about parochial) which restricts freedom of expression. Actually, I understand clothing rules, but it makes me mad to see the enforcement (or lack thereof). Some girls show half of their backs while others get sent out for showing just a tad bit of skin.

    Another freedom violation – Our school receives visits from the drug dog several times a month. Students are made to stand in the hall while the dog runs around the room. This is announced over the intercom – “We are under a lockdown. Students may not leave the rooms.” I thought lockdown was a prison term!

    Other examples don’t pop into mind, but I think there are many out there.

    Not just kids
    Everytime I step into my daughter’s junior high, I’m asked to take off my hat, regardless of what sort of hat I’m wearing…ball cap, snazzy straw boater, or wooly stocking cap. It’s usually an adult hall monitor who I grew up with–she was the biggest juvenile delinquent in the neighborhood. I take my hat off but always make a point of telling her, “school sucks!” I wonder what they’d do if I didn’t take my hat off?
