Then again if I hate the thing I have a number of bibliophile friends that will take it off my hands.

I’m not real keen on reading things on a screen. I like plain old paper. Heck I even subscribe to National Review print edition and don’t read it online.

Sony Reader Virtually Useless for Reading
The new Sony reader is nearly useless for reading. The key advantage to books is that they are accessible. I don’t like books though. Their heavy and harder to access than computer files. Paper books are information for the slow. But the Sony Reader is a reader without information.

To get information onto the Sony reader you need permission from sony: either by getting the “ebook” from someone they authorized or by using software they authorized or by violating their license. Despite the flaw of slow-fashioned paper books, I don’t need anyone’s permission to read one.

I like reading stuff on my handheld devices, but I cannot imagine what I would read on a Sony reader? Old books out-of-copyright that are not relevant anymore? Something from the tiny amount of content selected by Sony as worthy of availability in their propriety “ebook” format?

Nice screen technology though. I would love it if there was palm OS device, a java OS device, an embedded linux device, or a pocket PC with a screen like that.

I should start charging Sony a commission. Between work and showing it to family over Thanksgiving I think I’ve sold 4-5.

The “slow” what? I spend a lot of time online but when it’s time to read books, I pick up a paper copy. The only thing I’m slow at is eating.

I think that it would be wise to rethink your assumptions about who uses print resources.
