Ashford University Introduces Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science and Media

As demands upon library personnel change to embrace new media and modern methods of document control, the educational requirements for professional librarians have evolved. Ashford University, an academic institution owned by Bridgepoint Education (NYSE: BPI), has created a degree in Library Science and Media that is a dynamic academic solution that reaches beyond the traditional librarian’s realm of activity to the new landscape of library oversight, information management and research support.

    Isn’t this a for-profit company?
    From what I can tell, this “institution” is a for-profit “education” company. It has a CEO instead of a Dean or President of the Board. I would steer clear of this place on that criteria alone.

    Caveat Emptor Needed!!!
    It does have a disclaimer that the program does not provide licensure or certification of any kind, but the full store is certainly misleading in the following statement “students of this degree may seek jobs in data and information coordination and brokerage, telecom and web systems management, as well as traditional teaching, research, clerical and librarians’ positions throughout public and private industry.” I am certain that the majority of public library’s would not hire someone with this Ashford Univeristy degree to be librarians, but not so sure about law firms and the private sector, as many of them are not necessarily aware that the MLS Degree even exists.

    Thank you for the comments about this article. I agree with the comments. Just wanted to give some insight about why this article was posted. I thought that it would be good to have on librarians radar that there was a program like this out there. Can’t debate it if you do not know it exist.

    They claim to be reaching into new areas. Again another thing just to have on radar.

    Do not be too sure that public libraries would not hire folks with this degree. The vast majority of PLs in this country are run and staffed by people without accredited graduate degrees. Sad, but true.

      Thanks for the comment. I guess it was naive of me to think that non-degreed folks are hired as librarians in public libraries.
