The Indianapolis Star takes a remarkably long look at moves by the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library to give CEO Linda Mielke a raise.
The 4 percent salary increase approved this month will bring her annual pay to nearly $122,000. Board President Louis Mahern said Mielke is worth at least that much, but it will take cutting library services to pay for the increase.
“We can’t look to taxpayers, so any more money must come from staff or services,” Mahern said, “and I think we’ve asked enough of the staff.”
What a load of crap!
Fire her and open the job for $99,000 and I am confident that qualified people will apply. Post the job at $80,000 and you will have qualified people apply.
I hope the people in that city speak out. If the director is getting a 4% increase I hope the rest of the staff is getting that.
Oh come on
Cutting services to fund less than a 5k raise for the director of a major systems. Me thinks there is a flaw in the story. 122k is not an outrageous salary for a large system. Personally I think she is under paid for a 20+ branch system. I work in a system 1/4th the size as the assistant and I make 2/3rds that amount.
Re:What a load of crap!–RETORT
Fire her? Has it occured to you that she might be worth it? As the poster below states $5,000 in a raise should not mean cutting of services. The board member is clueless. The person who I’m replying to is also clueless. Cut the salary and get qualified applicants? Fire the director for a raise? I can’t be the only one who fails to see the logic in the above comment. If you can retain qualified staff who are doing a good job for so little, you are a fool not to do so. Why begrudge anyone who is being paid well for a job they are doing especially if they are doing a good job? I think the larger problem here is why do we think $122,000 is an excessive salary. My guess is the perspective of those who work and toil for much less. If you have a problem with what your paid do something, don’t criticize others who are better paid. S/he makes more money than me so they suck is a really hollow argument. My belief is the above poster is probably under paid and jealous of those who make more salary.
Be fair
Why can’t the rest of the staff get a raise too? They might be worth at least that much too! Why should only the CEO get a raise? It is just not fair. This is not to say that the CEO is not doing a good job and does not deserve a raise but why should the CEO be singled out for a raise? This is just typical in management thinking that they are the only worthy lot!
